Asia Cup 2023, India vs. Sri Lanka Overview

In the Asia Cup 2023 match between India and Sri Lanka, the top five batsmen for India—Rohit Sharma, Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, KL Rahul, and Hardik Pandya—were all severely damaged by Sri Lankan spinner Dushmantha Chameera.

Dushmantha Chameera of Sri Lanka celebrated after removing India’s KL Rahul without a cap during the Asia Cup cricket match in Colombo.

Asia Cup 2023, India vs. Sri Lanka:

On Tuesday in Colombo’s R Premadasa Stadium, reigning champions Sri Lanka displayed their superiority over India. India’s top five batters, Rohit Sharma (53), Shubman Gill (19), Virat Kohli (3), KL Rahul (39), and Hardik Pandya (5), have all been spooked by Sri Lankan spinner Dushmantha Chameera. His spinning performance has received a lot of great feedback on social media, including praise from the R Premadasa Stadium pitch.

India’s opening batsmen got off to a good start against Sri Lanka in their second Super 4 game. Continuous boundaries from captain Rohit Sharma knocked the Sri Lankan bowlers on their heels. Shubman Gill got off to a poor start, but just as he was picking up speed, Dushmantha Chameera bowled him out with a special ball.

Virat Kohli was soon after caught by Dasun Shanaka off a delivery from Dushmantha Chameera as he was making his way back to the pavilion. India suffered back-to-back defeats, but Dushmantha Chameera’s task was far from finished; in his subsequent over, he removed Captain Rohit Sharma.

KL Rahul played well against Sri Lanka’s lethal bowling assault, but Dushmantha Chameera compelled him to make a difficult shot that led to a catch by Chameera. In an effort to stop the loss of wickets for India, Hardik Pandya was sent back to the pavilion by Dushmantha Chameera as well.

Spinner Dushmantha Chameera of Sri Lanka put pressure on India’s batting lineup during Tuesday’s Super 4 match in the Asia Cup. In his 10-over session, Chameera claimed five wickets for 40 runs.

In the previous game, Indian captain Rohit Sharma called the toss and elected to bat against Sri Lanka. While Sri Lanka didn’t alter their starting lineup, India did, substituting spinning all-arounder Akshar Patel for fast bowler Shardul Thakur.

The middle-order batsman Shreyas Iyer, who was unable to participate in India’s second Asia Cup game owing to back pain, was told to rest for this game as well. Iyer, who returned to professional cricket six months after back surgery, sat out the game against Pakistan as well.

Concerns regarding his fitness have been raised because he did not play in the games leading up to the 2019 World Cup in India.

Dushmantha Chameera, a spinner from Sri Lanka, became the youngest player ever to accomplish this record on September 12 in an Asia Cup match against India by collecting five wickets at the age of 20. India’s batting collapse, which started with Shubman Gill’s dismissal in the 12th over of their innings, was mostly the work of Chameera.

Following Gill, Chameera proceeded to get rid of Rohit Sharma, KL Rahul, and Hardik Pandya before taking five wickets. He gave up 40 runs in just 10 overs and, at the age of 20 years and 246 days, became the youngest Sri Lankan bowler to claim five wickets. The former Sri Lankan record holder, Charitha Buddhika, took five wickets for the island nation at the age of 21 years and 65 days.

In the previous game, India had won the toss and decided to bat first. The first five overs were cautiously batted by India’s opening batsmen a day after their spectacular triumph over Pakistan. After 10 overs, India had a total of 65/0 but rapidly lost three wickets, falling to 91 runs.

After a significant 63-run stand for the fourth wicket between Rahul and Ishan Kishan, Chameera once more removed Rahul. Soon after, India’s innings started to crumble as they were reduced to 197/9 in 47 overs before the game was stopped by rain. India’s batting continued after the break and reached 213 runs.

In addition to Chameera’s outstanding performance, Charith Asalanka and captain Dasun Shanaka both claimed four wickets for Sri Lanka. Rahul and Kishan each scored 39 and 33 runs, while Rohit Sharma led all scorers for India with 53 runs.

India has played cricket for the third day in a row as Pakistan’s last match was moved to the reserve day, ending on Monday rather than Sunday. India defeated Pakistan convincingly by 228 runs after posting a daunting score of 356/2 in their allotted 50 overs and bowling them out for just 128 runs.
