UFO Sightings 2023: How NASA Can Incorporate Science Into the Discussion

UFO Sightings 2023: The agency’s consultant, an astronomer, has talked about how to give claims of “unidentified unusual events” in nature more credibility.

The contentious subject of unexplained Unusual Events (UUEs), sometimes known as unexplained flying objects or UFOs, has attracted the attention of NASA.

A report explaining how and why NASA wants to get engaged in the study of UUEs was made available by the organisation on September 14th. Since the military began looking into reports of “flying saucers” in the 1940s, the US government has long been interested in astronomical phenomena. However, the paper comes to the conclusion that NASA is the organisation most suited to oversee rigorous scientific research on UUEs.

There is no proof to support the idea that UUEs are naturally alien. However, in order to carefully examine claims of enigmatic airborne phenomena, NASA has recruited Mark McEwen as the director of UUE research.

David Spiegel, the head of a group of impartial scientists at the Simons Foundation in New York City, was interviewed by Nature regarding the function of scientists in assessing UUE reports.

UFO Sightings 2023: How did it feel to be on the panel?

It was a learning opportunity. I’ve learned a lot about the information that NASA gathers from commercial satellites and the Earth. Then I started getting a lot of emails from the general public, from sceptics to people who frequently write about having two aliens live in their attic.

Better data on UUEs are demanded in the report. How do we acquire that?
Creating a reliable database of these events is the first step. We must consider all conceivable interpretations of the events. You can wish to gather photos taken from different perspectives to demonstrate that it’s not typical objects like balloons, drones, or aeroplanes.

Is it worthwhile to incorporate something that frequently entails off-limits behaviour?
This is a high-risk, high-reward endeavour by nature. It’s possible that you learn nothing at all. But it’s crucial if you do.

UFO Sightings 2023: Why should NASA participate?

In our culture, there is an issue where people believe that many things are being kept secret and conspiracies are taking place. When the Defence Department has photos of events, they are not classified based on what is shown in the image but rather on the method used to get the image.

One of the report’s most important recommendations, in my opinion, is that NASA create an app that anyone can download to their phones and use to collect data. It’s an opportunity to engage the general population in science because when you see something unfamiliar, you get data about it. They can also participate in that process. We practise openly.

More data collection is the only way to advance, and NASA excels at doing so.

UFO Sightings 2023: How do you intend to utilise the app?

Consider your phone to be a data storage device. A phone can detect the local acoustic environment, gravitational field, electromagnetic field, and radio signals. What exactly would you want to record and encode? And how can you know that the photographs haven’t been altered? When creating a database, you want to be sure that no photos have been altered.

UFO Sightings 2023: The app will you be used?

Fun can be had playing with it. When you observe anything odd, it usually turns out to be an aeroplane or a drone.

UFO Sightings 2023: What additional options are there for looking for life outside of Earth?

The study of technological signatures from the solar system and beyond is being funded by NASA. A project that examined [telescope] data from Dyson spheres is a nice illustration of this. In hypothetical Dyson spheres, advanced civilizations build a shell around their star so that you are inside it and rely entirely on the star’s energy to sustain your civilisation. Some astrophysicists with keen eyes realised that if they existed, it would be evident in the data, so they searched.

The Moon’s surface doesn’t age as swiftly as Earth’s does. We can search for evidence of people who weren’t us landing on the Moon. Look through the lunar images to look for unique landing areas.

How do you incorporate the limitations of current research, such as this week’s Mexican report on foreign mummies, into your work?

You shouldn’t remark, “I don’t believe you,” as soon as someone claims to have witnessed something weird. You respond, “Okay, how do you test this strange idea?” instead. And I’ll use the mummies as an example. If this is true, some samples must be transported to different labs, where their DNA will be sequenced.

As scientists, it is occasionally our responsibility to spend a small amount of time looking into claims of strange happenings. Instead than simply adopting a position of belief or doubt, we should seek information and see what we can discover. It’s an opportunity to demonstrate how science develops.
