The contentious subject of unexplained Unusual Events (UUEs), sometimes known as unexplained flying objects or UFOs, has attracted the attention of NASA.
A report explaining how and why NASA wants to get engaged in the study of UUEs was made available by the organisation on September 14th. Since the military began looking into reports of “flying saucers” in the 1940s, the US government has long been interested in astronomical phenomena. Consider your phone to be a data storage device. A phone can detect the local acoustic environment, gravitational field, electromagnetic field, and radio signals. The study of technological signatures from the solar system and beyond is being funded by NASA. A project that examined [telescope] data from Dyson spheres is a nice illustration of this. In hypothetical Dyson spheres, advanced civilizations build a shell around their star so that you are inside it and rely entirely on the star’s energy to sustain your civilisation. Some astrophysicists with keen eyes realised that if they existed, it would be evident in the data, so they searched.

How do you incorporate the limitations of current research, such as this week’s Mexican report on foreign mummies, into your work?
You shouldn’t remark, “I don’t believe you,” as soon as someone claims to have witnessed something weird. You respond, “Okay, how do you test this strange idea?” instead. And I’ll use the mummies as an example. If this is true, some samples must be transported to different labs, where their DNA will be sequenced.
As scientists, it is occasionally our responsibility to spend a small amount of time looking into claims of strange happenings. Instead than simply adopting a position of belief or doubt, we should seek information and see what we can discover. It’s an opportunity to demonstrate how science develops.
