Joao Felix has had a better than expected debut at Barcelona, scoring three goals and dishing out one assist in three games. On the final day of the summer transfer window, he transferred from Atletico Madrid to Barça on loan.
There is no guarantee that Barcelona will wish to sign him on a long-term basis in the future or that there will be a deal between Barcelona and Atletico Madrid. He’s having a good time in Catalonia, though. Felix remarked that he significantly reduced his income to play for Barcelona because he wanted to have fun, and Barcelona is the perfect place for that.
In Barcelona’s five-goal victory over Antwerp last night in the Champions League, Felix was a part of three of the goals. He notched two goals and a helper. After the game, the 23-year-old Portuguese forward responded to a query from Mundo Deportivo, a media organisation located in Barcelona, by saying that he left behind the illusion of a huge salary to get to Barcelona.
I needed a change, he declared. A space where I could concentrate on my football was necessary. I’ve always said that here is the place where I belong. Here, everything is going smoothly. I must now persevere and rediscover my enjoyment of playing.
Felix transferred from Benfica to Atletico Madrid in 2019. His time there wasn’t going well, though, because of a disagreement with the team’s coach Diego Simeone and bad play on the pitch. Earlier this year, he also went on loan to Chelsea, but his spell there wasn’t successful either, with just 4 goals in 20 games.
In a July interview, Felix declared his ambition to play for Barcelona. Xavi Hernandez, the coach of Barcelona, was not thinking of him at the time. He spent 33,000 kilometres in preseason training with Atletico, but he was unable to participate in a single game. Finally, he was loaned out to Barcelona on the final day of the summer transfer season.
Change your surroundings if things don’t work out. At Chelsea, I tried, and now I’m trying at Barcelona. I wasn’t feeling well at Atletico because of that. I was unable to adjust to the club’s playing philosophy or the coach. But I’ve always given it my all, Felix remarked.
Felix is enjoying the thrill of competing and has travelled to Barcelona, where he earned a spot in the starting lineup for two of the team’s three games while tallying three goals. He acknowledged that his start was excellent and said, Honestly, I didn’t expect such a terrific start. Everything is running smoothly. Hopefully, it will stay this way through the season’s end.
